Shaykh Ibrahim Osi-Efa: The Ultimate Fight

Shaykh Ibrahim Osi-Efa:  Chivilry, Youth and Sahaba

“The highest level of people who control their rage is that they do good to those who do them wrong and we see that example through the entire life of our blessed Prophet(SAW).” [Shaykh Ibrahim Osi-Efa]

Shaykh Ibrahim gives an enlightening talk challenging the youth to return to the chivilrous way of the Sahaaba in a time when our society parallels that of Makkah.  Makkah was a place  where  people of ignorance became the best of mankind under the guidance of our beloved Messenger, Muhammad(SAW).  Among these masters were youth like Umar bin Al-Khattab, Ali bin abi Talib and Abdur-Rahman bin Awf, who went from being killers living in Jahiliyah [ignorance] to becoming soft hearted individuals, who had lines etched in their faces from tears that flowed as they cried from the fear and love of God.

These individuals still fought, but instead of fighting to hurt people for lowly reasons like anger and ego, they fought to uphold justice, protect the oppressed and take a whole society out of the darkness, sincerely for the sake of Allah, but first they fought the battle within themselves to conquer the anger and rage that is within everyone of us. Perfectly illustrated with the example of Ali bin Abi Talib, in which he over powered an enemy on the battlefield and after giving him the opportunity to correct himself, his enemy spat in his face, but Ali simply withdrew, putting his sword down and walking, but when asked by his enemy why he had spared him, Ali replied:

“I was fighting you purely in the way of Allah, but when you spat in my face, your insult made me angry and if I had killed you in anger, it would have taken me to the Hell Fire – so I had no choice but to let you go. To kill someone in anger or out of desire for revenge is not bravery, but the act of a coward.”

Dawah At Work

To Dawah or not to Dawah…

So my last week of work with my current employer has finally come to an end.  In an attempt to make up for the lack of dawah given to my colleagues I aimed to give every single person that i’ve come into contact with something from Islam, even if it was small and seemingly insignificant like clearing up a misconception they may hold.  My motivation came from something said to me a few years ago.  If our eyes have been opened to the truth and we have something that can equate to eternal salvation, is it not our duty to share it with our fellow brothers and sisters in humanity?  Will God not ask us about keeping His message to ourselves?  Is it not a message and mercy for all of mankind?  “Yes.  So ‘Islamasaurus’, don’t be selfish.”

Since entering the working world and interacting with what are supposed to be the intelligent mature adults of today, I see people are becoming more and more numb to the realities of the world they live in, more self-centred and preoccupied by the producer-consumer machine contructed to catch us in an inescapable web, chasing material wealth whilst ignoring the true wealth of knowledge that helps us understand our purpose.

After speaking to nearly everyone at my work about Islam/current affairs, whether social or economical, I have concluded that we need to start seeing all humans as brothers and sisters, who need to know the truth.  Although apprently 1 in 4 people are Muslim today, the majority of non-Muslims do not have the slightest idea about the teachings of Islam, which can be attributed to the fact that Muslims themselves don’t know the teachings of Islam, let alone follow them.  Many of the Muslims I  have worked with did not fast, did not pray, openly drank alcohol among other things.  If this is what non-Muslims see, how will non-Muslims come to know about the beautiful way of life, that is Islam.

Every single Muslim who has truly accepted the message of Islam needs to now more than ever call his colleages, friends and family back to that which gives us life and takes us out of the darkness.

Alif.  Lam.  Ra.  This is a scripture which We have revealed unto thee (Muhammad) that thereby thou mayst bring forth mankind from darkness unto light, by the permission of their Lord, unto the path of the Mighty, the Owner of Praise.  [Qur'an 14:1]

Sahaba: Dealing with verbal abuse

QUESTION: You’re on the receiving end of some verbal abuse, do you:

a)  Ignore it, remembering the old saying “sticks and stones will break my bones, but words will never hurt me.”

b)  Give the abuser a peice of your mind that they’ll remember and try putting them in their place, while partly protecting your honor, or more likely pride?

“Once, a person was verbally abusing Abu Bakr (RA) while the Prophet (SAW) was curiously watching with a smile. After taking much abuse quietly, Abu Bakr responded to a few of his comments. At this, the Prophet exhibited his disapproval, got up and left. Abu Bakr caught up with the Prophet and wondered, ‘O Messenger of Allah, he was abusing me and you remained sitting. When I responded to him, you disapproved and got up.’ The Messenger of Allah responded, ‘There was an angel with you responding to him. When you responded to him, Satan took his place.’

He then said “O Abu Bakr, there are three solid truths: If a person is wronged and he forbears it (without seeking revenge) just for the sake of Allah almighty, Allah will honor him and give him the upper hand with His help; if a person opens a door of giving gifts for cementing relationships with relatives, Allah will give him abundance; and, if a person opens a door of seeking charity for himself to increase his wealth, Allah will further reduce his wealth.” [Musnad Ahmad]

c)  Relax, pick up huge akhirah points and let an Angel do the hardwork for you.

The Graveyard Shift

Asalamualaikum,

Abu Huraira reported that the Messenger of Allah said, “The Qur’an contains a surah of thirty ayahs which will intercede for a man until he is forgiven. It is: ‘Blessed be He who has the Kingdom in His Hand!’” [abu Dawud, Ahmad, at-Tirmidhi]

What is given increasingly little thought as time goes on, yet is one of the most obvious realities that we will eventually face?  If there is something we are sure about it is that our time will eventually expire and death will overtake us.

Fortunately, although some may assume that our system will shut down and we’ll fade into darkness, it’s not the case.  Infact it will be more like waking up, however this time forever, to an eternal life which will be spent either in torment, pleasure or a mixture of the two.  But the first stage or trial is the lonely isolated grave.

So while alone, it would probably be nice to have someone there looking out for you.  Put yourself in a situation where you’re going to be alone for 24 hours in a confined place, with Zombie dogs, posessed demon cannibals or whatever you’d fear being alone with in a little room.  I think nearly everybody would be more than willing to give away everything they own to have a powerful gaurdian.  The grave unfortunately is worse than that.  You’re not stuck in a room, you’re stuck in a torture chamber that doesn’t have enough room to move, your ribs are crushed until they interlock and you’re tormented by the things that your wildest imagination cannot conjure up, I mean forget the ‘Saw’ movies or ‘The Texas chain saw massacre’, that’s nothing.  Secondly, it’s not for 24 hours, but until the Day of Judgment.  A truly terrifying idea, but more importantly… a reality.

Lucky for us, Allah (swt) has blessed us with a protector.  And our protector is, Surah Mulk, the sixty seventh chapter of the Qur’an containing only 30 verses.  The Surah explains the infinite power of God and how anybody who rejects warnings of the Prophets will be companions with the Blazing Fire.  The surah in line with its character is also known as ‘The Defender’.

1)  The Prophet said, ‘Surah al Mulk is the protector from the torment of the grave’ [Nasai]

2)  Anas reported Rasulullah as saying, “There is a Surah which will plead for its reciter till it causes him to enter paradise.”  [at-Tabrani]

3)  Jabir said it was the custom of the Prophet not to go to sleep until he had read Tabarakallahi Biyadihil Mulk and Alif Laam Meem Tanzeel.  [Ahmad, Tirmidhi]

That’s it, that’s all it takes to save ourselves from the torment of the grave.  Read Surah mulk every night.  Once you’ve read it and are in a habit, it takes no longer than 10 minutes.  If you still can’t be bothered…

About the grave………The Prophet (saw) said:  “If people could hear what the animals hear, they would go insane.”

Welcoming Ramadhan – Gaze of Mercy

Asalamualaikum Warahmatullahi,

Finally, the month has come, I welcome it, in need and hope for change. May God accept all our efforts. And I think Shaykh Abdul Kareem Yahya, an asset to the Muslims of today, has given a very valuable reminder and introduction to the holy month. I use the supplication he has made and start my Ramadhan:

O Allah, if any of Your slaves have transgressed the rights You have prescribed to me, they are excused. I ask you to grant them and me Paradise, and that You make us among its dwellers whom You have described in Your saying, “We have removed what was in their breasts of rancor, brethren on couches facing one another;” Quran (15:47). I also ask anyone who I have wronged to seek their due from me and to forgive me.

Ameen.

A message from Shaykh Abul Kareem Yahya

In the Name of Allah, Most Merciful and Compassionate

Praise is for Allah, Lord of the Worlds. May Allah bless and grant peace to our liegelord Muhammad as well as his folk and companions.

Dear brothers and sisters from the nation of our beloved Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him),

As we wait in eager anticipation of the noble guest who approaches, the blessed month of Ramadan in which the Quran was revealed, we undoubtedly are making physical and spiritual preparations therefore.

Among the preparations that the scholars of Islam have encouraged is preparing our hearts for Allah’s gaze. Baihaqi relates, “When it is the first night of the month of Ramadan, Allah, Mighty and Majestic, gazes to them and the one to whom Allah looks, He does not punish him, ever.” The place to which Allah looks is the heart. So what will Allah see in your and my heart if He were to look to us on the first night of Ramadan?

One of the qualities that would prevent us from this blessed gaze (and from many other opportunities for forgiveness) is malice. The Prophet, May Allah bless him and grant him peace, taught us of the Night of Power and the Half Night of Sha’ban that those who harbor rancor, mistreat parents, severe bonds of kinship or drink are prevented from Allah’s merciful gaze. Do we want Allah to look to His servants on the first night of Ramadan and overlook us because we are bearing ill will against each other? Is whatever anyone has done to hurt us so important that we can not overlook it in exchange for an opportunity for eternal salvation from Allah’s punishment? What about all of those whom we have wronged? Do we not need Allah’s pardon as well as theirs?

We can purify our hearts in preparation for this gaze from our Merciful, Forgiving Lord and also expose ourselves to an opportunity for His pardon when we need it most, by pardoning His servants. Allah said, “The one who pardons and reconciles his reward is upon Allah;” Quran (42:40). Tabarani relates that the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, said, “A caller will call [on the Day of Rising], ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise’ Then he will call a second time, ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise’ It will be said, ‘Who is the one whose reward is upon Allah, Mighty and Majestic?’ He will say, ‘Those who pardon people.’ Then he will call a third time, ‘Let him stand whose reward is upon Allah and let him enter paradise.’ Then so and so many thousand will stand and enter paradise without reckoning.” Imagine being among that fortunate group and having all of our many sins forgiven and receiving our reward directly from Allah!

In preparation for the blessed first night of Ramadan, Insha’Allah, and that day in which each of us will meet Allah, let us pardon one another and all of Allah’s servants. I will begin with my own sinful self.

“Our Lord forgives us and our brethren who preceded us in faith and do no place in our hearts ill will towards those who believe. Our Lord, indeed you are compassionate and merciful.” Quran (54:10)

And Allah alone grants tawfiq (success),

Abdul-Kareem Yahyaa

MuslimMatters: ACTION-GAZA

I’ve met a lot of people in recent days with defeated attitudes, who complain and talk, but as the article below says, sadly they do not “walk the talk”.  I was thinking about the statement of a scholar of the past who once said that he wished he were alive in the time when there will be no Khilafah[Caliphate].  He went on to explain that he envied those that will have the opportunity to work for this State and establish the truth, just like the Sahabah(companions of the Prophet(SAW)) did, as those people will have the potential to earn mass amounts of reward.

So we live in a time where persecution is common and open, there is no shield for the muslims and innocent people continue to live under oppression.  I can’t think of a better time to appreciate the ayah “establish the good and forbid the evil”.  If we don’t take heed of this now, each of us on the individual level is at loss.  Even if others are working hard to bring change and change comes, they will have the reward, not us.  Victory and success is from Allah, the test is what you as an individual do.  Work for the sake of Allah to help instill peace and justice in the world is the duty of every Muslim.

The following is a list of ACTIONS we can take to play our part in helping the people of Gaza, the list doesn’t include everything one can do, but it’s still a good reminder of small actions we can take to make a difference, if not to the overall situation, then at least to our akhirah.

MuslimMatters.com : Action Gaza

Can we Spare 60 Minutes? Can we Walk the Talk?

Bismillah, before continuing, please check all pessimism at the gate, otherwise don’t read any further.

Letters to editor is the most-read section in the entire newspaper, and is read by local leaders as a means of
keeping up with the pulse of the community.
• Write a letter to your local newspaper (you can find it from the list here). You have a better chance of
getting published than writing to one of the national newspapers.
• Consider these guidelines to increase your chance of getting published. The most important point: Make
ONE point, even if you have a hundred swarming in your head. Be very succinct and add some “color”
or “reasoned emotion”, it may increase your chance of getting published.

8. CIRCULATE | (EXTRA BONUS AJAR):
• Cross-post on your blog. Email it. Post to your facebook profile.
• Print out this hard-copy of this “Action-Gaza”, make copies and distribute.

Robert Fisk on Palestine and Gaza

The following are excerpts of the latest article written by Robert Fisk.  I recommend that everybody reads this for an accurate summary of the heinous crimes committed by Israel since it’s creation; how many innocent civilians they have slaughtered, many of them being children, along with the lies told every step of the way, including the most recent “Hamas broke the ceasefire” excuse.

“So once again, Israel has opened the gates of hell to the Palestinians. Forty civilian refugees dead in a United Nations school, three more in another. Not bad for a night’s work in Gaza by the army that believes in “purity of arms”. But why should we be surprised?

Have we forgotten the 17,500 dead – almost all civilians, most of them children and women – in Israel’s 1982 invasion of Lebanon; the 1,700 Palestinian civilian dead in the Sabra-Chatila massacre; the 1996 Qana massacre of 106 Lebanese civilian refugees, more than half of them children, at a UN base; the massacre of the Marwahin refugees who were ordered from their homes by the Israelis in 2006 then slaughtered by an Israeli helicopter crew; the 1,000 dead of that same 2006 bombardment and Lebanese invasion, almost all of them civilians?”

………………

“I’ve reported the excuses the Israeli army has served up in the past for these outrages. Since they may well be reheated in the coming hours, here are some of them: that the Palestinians killed their own refugees, that the Palestinians dug up bodies from cemeteries and planted them in the ruins, that ultimately the Palestinians are to blame because they supported an armed faction, or because armed Palestinians deliberately used the innocent refugees as cover.

The Sabra and Chatila massacre was committed by Israel’s right-wing Lebanese Phalangist allies while Israeli troops, as Israel’s own commission of inquiry revealed, watched for 48 hours and did nothing. When Israel was blamed, Menachem Begin’s government accused the world of a blood libel. After Israeli artillery had fired shells into the UN base at Qana in 1996, the Israelis claimed that Hizbollah gunmen were also sheltering in the base. It was a lie. The more than 1,000 dead of 2006 – a war started when Hizbollah captured two Israeli soldiers on the border – were simply dismissed as the responsibility of the Hizbollah. Israel claimed the bodies of children killed in a second Qana massacre may have been taken from a graveyard. It was another lie. The Marwahin massacre was never excused. The people of the village were ordered to flee, obeyed Israeli orders and were then attacked by an Israeli gunship. The refugees took their children and stood them around the truck in which they were travelling so that Israeli pilots would see they were innocents. Then the Israeli helicopter mowed them down at close range. Only two survived, by playing dead. Israel didn’t even apologise.

Twelve years earlier, another Israeli helicopter attacked an ambulance carrying civilians from a neighbouring village – again after they were ordered to leave by Israel – and killed three children and two women. The Israelis claimed that a Hizbollah fighter was in the ambulance. It was untrue. I covered all these atrocities, I investigated them all, talked to the survivors. So did a number of my colleagues. Our fate, of course, was that most slanderous of libels: we were accused of being anti-Semitic.

And I write the following without the slightest doubt: we’ll hear all these scandalous fabrications again. We’ll have the Hamas-to-blame lie – heaven knows, there is enough to blame them for without adding this crime – and we may well have the bodies-from-the-cemetery lie and we’ll almost certainly have the Hamas-was-in-the-UN-school lie and we will very definitely have the anti-Semitism lie. And our leaders will huff and puff and remind the world that Hamas originally broke the ceasefire. It didn’t. Israel broke it, first on 4 November when its bombardment killed six Palestinians in Gaza and again on 17 November when another bombardment killed four more Palestinians.

Muharram And ‘Ashura – A summary

The HISTORY of Ashura:

The month of Muharram is deeply rooted in the history of Islam.  The virtue of this month is supported by the fact that the Prophet(SAW) called it the Month of Allah [Shahr Allah].  Thus it is an opportune time to hasten to good deeds and to strengthen our relationship with Allah.

The Prophet(SAW) said,  “The best of fasts after the month of Ramadan are in the Month of Allah, which you call Muharram. And the best of prayer after the obligatory prayer is the night prayer”.  [Muslim]

Muharram is also home to the day of ‘Ashura, a blessed day, commonly know as Yawm al Ashura[The tenth day], on which the Prophets Nuh(AS) and Moses(AS) both fasted.  Many historical events have occurred on this day which have included the Prophets(AS) and also the Sahaaba(RA), for example the Martydom of Imam Husayn(RA), the grandson of the Prophet(SAW).  But the following shows why the Prophet(SAW) attached great importance to this day:

When the Messenger of Allah (SAW) reached Medina, he found the Jews fasting the Day of `Ashura , so he asked them,  What is this day you are fasting?  They said,  This is a tremendous day. Allah saved Moses and his people on this day and drowned Pharaoh and his people. Moses fasted it out of thanks, so we fast it too.  The Messenger of Allah (SAW) said,  And we are more deserving of Musa than you are.  So he fasted this day, and ordered that it be fasted.  [Bukhari and Muslim]

A version narrated by Imam Ahmad ads: “This is the day on which the Ark settled on Mount Joodi, so Noah fasted this day in thanksgiving.”

The Prophet (SAW) said,  “Fast the Day of `Ashura  and be different from the Jews by fasting a day before it or a day after it.”  [Ahmad]

Although it is the day of Ashura that the Prophets(AS) fasted, it is also highly recommended to fast one day before or one day after.  The Prophet(SAW) stated that should he live to see next Ashura he intends to fast the 9th and 10th of Muharram.

The VIRTUES of Ashura:

Fasting: The Prophet Muhammad (SAW) was asked about fasting on the Day of Ashura. He answered: “It atones for the sins of the preceding year.” [Muslim]

Charity: It has been reported from Abd Allah ibn `Amr ibn al-`As (Allah be pleased with him), that “Whoever fasts `Ashura’ it is as if he has fasted the entire year. And whoever gives charity this day it is like the charity of an entire year.” [Imam Ibn Rajab: Kitab: Lata'if al-Ma`arif fi ma li Mawasim al-`Am min al-Wadha'if]

Other virtues: It is a day in which Allah forgave an entire people. The Prophet (SAW) said to a man, “If you want to fast a month after Ramadan, then fast Muharram, for it has a day in which Allah forgave an entire people, and He turns to others in repentance in.” [Tirmidhi]

INNOVATIONS of Ashura:

Unfortunately there are some practices which have been introduced and attached to this day, primarily by our Shia brothers and sisters, however there are also strange practices among others.  It’s unfortunate that as opposed to maintaining friendly and brotherly relations, many Muslim put barriers up, however our duty  is to show our brothers that the Prophet(SAW) did not encourage these acts, with sound proofs.

Among the Shia’, mourning and grieving is associated with this day, aswell as acts of self harm in some cases.  The reason for this is because Husayn the beloved grandson of the Prophet(SAW) was martyred and truly it is a sad event that should affect the hearts of all Muslims.  However although their intentions might be sincere and out of love for the Ahlel Bayt[The household of the Prophet(SAW)], the actions are not based on what the Prophet(SAW) promoted, which contradicts the whole intention in the first place.  The Prophet(SAW) did not ask us to mourn for the days of where the Prophet(AS) faced trials and tribulations, nor their deaths, or the tribulations or death of anyone else for that matter, including the ahlel bayt.  However, the Prophet(SAW) did instruct us to hold the Ahlel bayt in high respect and pray to Allah to send blessings on them.

Other practices include things like not conducting marriage ceremonies in this month or some funny beliefs such as if one takes a bath on Ashura, he will never get ill.  These have no foundation in Islam, adherence is to the Qur’an, Hadith and sound sayings of the companions, not hearsay.

Muharram is a great month, may Allah(swt) aid us to make use of it and may the Muslims make mass amounts of du’a in this month for the people of Gaza and those suffering elsewhere, while changing our actions so that they are aligned with Allah and His book.  Ameen thumma ameen.

Egypt and the Muslim countries

“There was a day when we worried about the “Arab masses” – the millions of “ordinary” Arabs on the streets of Cairo, Kuwait, Amman, Beirut – and their reaction to the constant bloodbaths in the Middle East. Could Anwar Sadat restrain the anger of his people? And now – after three decades of Hosni Mubarak – can Mubarak (or “La Vache Qui Rit”, as he is still called in Cairo) restrain the anger of his people? The answer, of course, is that Egyptians and Kuwaitis and Jordanians will be allowed to shout in the streets of their capitals – but then they will be shut down, with the help of the tens of thousands of secret policemen and government militiamen who serve the princes and kings and elderly rulers of the Arab world.”

Read on:  Robert Fisk – The rotten state of Egypt is too powerless and corrupt to act

It’s overbearingly sad and disheartening seeing and being reminded of the state we are in as a nation.  A nation who are supposed to be united under one flag, upholding honor and justice, but instead we’re divided under rulers with little worry about anybody but themselves.  I was thinking about how so many people complain and say how it’s not a nice situation, but in many ways the majority of us are just like the rulers, concerned about ourselves and take no action that is within our capabilities.

I guess sadly it has to get worse before it gets better.  That’s how humans are, once things start to hit “home” for everybody, only then will people return back to Allah and His book, then by the will of Allah we might see change.  As they say… the leaders are a reflection of the people.

O you who believe, why is it that when you are told, “Go forth in Allah’s path,” you drop heavily to the ground? Are you pleased with the life of the world instead the Hereafter? The pleasure of this worldly life is but minute compared to the Hereafter.

If you do not go forth, Allah shall punish you severely and replace you with another nation. You will not be able to harm Allah in the least. Allah has power over all things.

[Qur'an:  Surah Tawbah 9:38-39]

The ongoing Gaza Massacre and Zionism

The ongoing Gaza Massacre

A little history

Since the onslaught on the Gaza strip began on Saturday the death toll has now reached 400, with nearly 2000 injured.  So again, we see yet another repeat of the countless attacks that have taken place in these lands since the creation of the Zionist state, Israel.  The state which only came into existence in 1948, illegally.  Going back to the Balfour Declaration of 1917, which began with the Foreign Secretary Arthur Balfour writing a letter to Walter Rothschild (I’m sure some have heard of the Investment bank, Rothschild), gaining the attention of the powerful Zionists in Britain.   A Jewish state was promised in exchange for financial support to aid Britain in the war against the Ottoman Caliphate and the Germans.  With the continual fragmentation of the Caliphate and the European colonial powers dividing up the pie, so to speak,  part of the end result around 31 years later was the creation of an illegitimate state.   In 1947 the U.N passed the ‘Partition Plan for Palestine’, as a solution to the Arab-Jewish conflict that had come to exist, along with just a “little” force, Israel orchestrated a campaign of fear and terror, forcing out Palestinians who were not only the majority, but were residents, expelling them from their own homes.

The story of Israel is simple and when studied, full of flagrant oppression and ultimately theft, yet so many are ignorant of what took place in the last 100 years. As opposed to looking at the origins, the root, the initial cause of the violence that we see today on our TV screens, comments like “Hamas are firing rockets into Israel, this is the problem” are made.  Now I am against violence and firing at civilian populations, but lets use our minds, we need to go back to where all this started, let’s say for arguments sake it can be verified that Hamas wrongfully fired rockets, and heck lets also pretend Israel was not blocking  aid which the people of Gaza desperately need, along with generally making their lives hell with all their check points.   Even after this, we can say Hamas shouldn’t have fired, but the original cause of this conflict still needs to be addressed. It’s like questioning a person about taking back his property from a man who stole it, the man who stole should be the one being admonished first, not the one reclaiming what was his.  [N.B I am not justifying the killing of civilians, rather making a point of how focus needs to be shifted back to the underlying cause]

In a problematic situation the detective goes to the scene of the crime, so surely journalists and news channels such as CNN, Sky News etc, should also look to the start of the conflict, where people(Zionists) came and wrongfully took land from the rightful owners.  But part of the truth is that nobody cares, unless there’s something in it for them.

“In the UN General Assembly, there have been an estimated 450 resolutions calling, in one form or another, for justice for the Palestinians. This is a world record. No country has incurred the opprobrium of the world community as often as Israel and no country has been excused its “rogue” behaviour so consistently, thanks to its backer, America.

When Iraq invaded Kuwait in 1990, it was ordered to withdraw by the UN Security Council. When the Iraqis failed to comply, they were attacked with such force that tens of thousands were slaughtered. When Israel seized the West Bank of the Jordan and Gaza, it was ordered to withdraw by the same UN Security Council. That was 35 years ago, and the occupation goes on. “[John Pilger]

Israel seems to support that rockets from Hamas warrant the disproportionate  and indiscriminate use of force against an entire people, leading to the murder of civilians.  All this goes on with no intervention, that’s the world we live in.

The Muslim worlds Reaction

The worst thing about all this is that something can be done, something should be done, but nothing is ever actually done.  In all societies those that have the most power are the leaders, thus bringing us to one of the most discussed and frustrating areas of ‘Islamic world politics’, none other than the notorious Muslim Leaders.  In a time where blood is being split, not of soldiers, but of innocent children and women, the leaders have nothing except words of condemnation, materializing as closed borders between Egypt and Gaza while people continue to die and medical supplies run low.  Further examples of the lack of concern can be seen when the Arab League organizes an emergency meeting for Sunday and members of the GCC [Saudi Arabia, Kuwait etc] postpone to Wednesday, due to “other meetings”.  These are the “leaders” who apparently care and look out for the affairs of the Nations, the ones who are supposed to uphold the banner of Justice.

While driving in Riyadh last year I saw a poster saying “Saudi Arabia:  Kingdom of Humanity” with a trademark picture of King Abdullah and the gang, unfortunately as much as they try to convince people, the actions[which are none] only show hypocrisy.  Gone are the days when if a Muslim woman was  as much as wrongfully touched the caliph would take action.  Today people are slaughtered, yet other ‘meetings’ take precedence, despite it being well known that a single drop of blood is more important to Allah than the Ka’ba and all that surrounds it.

So what does one do when leaders don’t care,  it’s clear that oppression is taking place and the world seems to be spiraling downwards to the point of mass violence and a complete sense of inhumanity?  Sometimes the feeling of helplessness takes over along with the sorrow that eats at your heart when you see the butchering of your brothers and sisters, which can lead to feelings of immense frustration.  Through all this it’s apparent that although easily done, it’s vital that we don’t fall into the trap of venting emotions in the wrong way, while at the same time being careful we aren’t passive and do nothing at all.  A balance must be found where we collectively do what we can to practically help – as opposed to just watching and discussing.

Our reaction as individuals; what we can DO!  The key word being DO.

1)  Make Du’a.  This is probably the most underrated action.  Du’a is the strongest weapon of a believer.  Keep the Muslims in gaza, and those suffering elsewhere in your du’a, along with all those being oppressed, Muslim or Non-Muslim.

2)  While we sit at home, sheltered, warm with plenty of food, the people of Gaza don’t have these luxuries.  Medical supplies, food and all the basic necessities are needed more than ever.  Remember, the problems haven’t just started with this attack, Israel has been subjecting the area to sanctions and so they have been living under inhumane conditions long before Saturday.  Sending aid through one of the charities is essential.

Along with doing it yourself, collecting donations from others is also beneficial, as many people don’t think to donate or get lazy.  If they can hand it to you directly and you organize it, this will be a source of reward for them, you and aid to the people.  Charities:

Islamic Relief : Donating to Palestine

Interpal Palestine

3)  Create awareness and join the demonstrations that are being organized against the atrocities being committed.  On the the topic of demonstrations:  I’d like to say, as Muslims, demonstrations should never involve violence, they must be peaceful.  Unfortunately some let emotions overtake them and they end up doing and saying things contrary to the mannerisms of a Muslim.  While attending demonstrations it is also vital that we educate ourselves on the history and oppression that has taken place for so many decades in this region, so that we can effectively pass this on to others, be it family, friends, work colleagues or acquaintances.

If you live in the UK or US, the following are websites on which information is given on demonstrations that might be held near you.

United States:  Demonstrations against the Gaza attacks

United Kingdom:  Demonstrations against the Gaza attacks

Finally, hopefully we all make some sort of an effort to aid our fellow Muslims and atleast, atleast keep them in our du’as constantly.

May Allah(SWT) bring an end to this violence and bring peace to the people of this region.  May Allah(SWT) ease their suffering and give them patience in this testing time.  Ameen thumma ameen.
